Blink Mini Review: The little box contains only the tiny cube-shaped camera and its flimsy stand, together with a USB cable and a pair of mains adapters, one for the UK and the other for EU sockets. It doesn’t contain a lot, but you wouldn’t expect it to at just £35 either
The security camera line from Blink, which is owned by Amazon, now includes the Blink Mini. It is a camera for people who want to monitor a single room or for anyone who wants to test the waters of smart security cameras without having to spend a lot of money. It is inexpensive, cheery, and simple.

The little box contains simply the tiny cube-shaped camera and its flimsy stand, together with a USB cable and a pair of mains adapters, one for the UK and the other for EU sockets. It doesn’t contain a lot, but you wouldn’t expect it to at just £35 either.
Although it is lightweight and has a cheap feel to it, it looks nice because it is covered in white and black plastic and has all the essential features. It records video at a resolution of 1080p and at a steady frame rate of 30 frames per second (a few cheaper 1080p security cameras record at slower frame rates than this, which results in choppy looking video clips). You also get two-way audio so you can communicate with the person on the other side of the camera using your phone, motion detection, and day and night video recording.
You may use the Blink smartphone app to see the video stream live or activate the motion detection feature, like with the majority of smart home security cameras. In response to motion detection, the Blink Mini takes a quick video clip and sends it to a central server for later review. The clip storage service is initially free (up until March 31, 2021, in reality), but after that date you must subscribe to it.
The “Plus” subscription supports limitless cameras and costs £80/yr or £8/mth, while the “Basic” subscription costs £25/yr (or £2.50/mth) per camera.
Considering that the more costly, battery-powered Blink XT 2 cameras (£100 each) come with lifetime, subscription-free clip storage, this isn’t overly expensive compared to other cameras, but it’s still a little frustrating. Additionally, the camera lacks a microSD card for storing video clips, though if you want that capability, you can get the Blink Sync Module 2 for an additional £50.

Setting up the Blink Mini is simple. Simply download the Blink app to your phone, create an account, and adhere to the on-screen instructions. In only a few minutes, you’ll be operational.
If you prefer a simple life, you can decide to keep it at that, but the app has lots of other settings you may play about with. Changes can be made to the infrared illumination LED’s intensity for nighttime video recordings, the duration of the clip that is captured (between 5 and 30 seconds), and the sensitivity of the motion detection.
Even the camera’s internal speaker, which is surprisingly loud for one so small, can be adjusted, as well as the camera’s “motion zones.” These enable you to effectively block out areas where movement shouldn’t be detected so that, for example, you don’t receive too many motion alerts from drapes fluttering in the wind.
The image quality under decent indoor lighting and during the day is adequate but not particularly noteworthy. The only thing that makes this security camera unique is its 30fps frame rate, which produces smoother, less jerky video recording than most security cameras at this price.
Night vision video recording on the Blink Mini is also remarkable. It recorded a crisper image than the Yi because of the greater, more equal illumination that its single infrared LED offered. The audio quality is good as well, with the speaker and microphone working together to give reasonably clear two-way audio.
The camera’s operation is efficient but has few functions. It has motion detection, but no face, human, or animal detection, nor any further features. For instance, the less expensive Yi Smart Security Camera can detect both human and infant screaming, doubling as a baby monitor in an emergency.
However, the Blink Mini’s compatibility with Amazon Echo speakers is one area where it excels. You can use the Alexa app on your phone to connect the Blink Skill to your Amazon account, and then you can use your voice to command your Echo device to show the live video from the camera on the screen.
The Blink Mini is a reliable, attractive, and reasonably priced home security camera. Up until March 31st 2021, you can store your video clips for free. After that, the subscription costs are rather affordable.
Although it lacks some capabilities, most notably a microSD card slot to entirely eliminate subscription fees, it still makes a great pick if money is limited due to its amazing video quality and the ability to install a module that can incorporate local video storage in the future.
